Arthur is a guest in COTS' Emergency Shelter.  While searching for a permanent, independent housing solution, he spends the day looking for employment. "I couldn't do it without the support COTS gives me," Arthur says.  "Since I've been at COTS, my Case Planner has given me resources, and referrals to partner agencies like JVS, Crossroads, and Michigan Rehabilitative Services. The agency is a constant source of encouragement.  I couldn't do it without my Case Planner's support."

Months after Arthur was laid off from his job at a collision shop, he lost his home to foreclosure.  With nowhere to go, Arthur moved into an abandoned home where he used a kerosene lamp for warmth and light.  Eventually, the fumes made him ill.  Fortunately, someone suggested Arthur seek shelter at COTS.

What's Next?

"Once I get a job, I plan to make time to volunteer in my community," Arthur promises.  "I don't have much money, but I have skills that I look forward to using to make a positive difference in my neighborhood."

Emergency Shelter

"Homeless is not a title that you want to embrace.  For me, it has definitely been a slap in the face.  But it doesn't have to be the end to anyone's story."

-Arthur, COTS Emergency Shelter Guest

Each person entering COTS' Emergency Shelter or housing programs first meets with a Case Planner who provides individualized case management, support and encouragement. Case Planners play an instrumental role in helping individuals and families address their current situations, set financial goals, obtain benefits, secure housing and take steps toward housing security.

Families who leave the Emergency Shelter for permanent housing receive follow-up and case management services for up to one year through COTS' Family Stabilization Program. They can also utilize COTS' Child Care Centers or Education & Employment Center for up to one year.
